what is lasik eye surgery?

LASIK is a surgical method in the eye to improve vision for people with nearsightedness, myopia, and astigmatism.
LASIK stands for in-situ laser keratomileusis that uses laser light to improve the shape of the cornea so that light passing through the cornea can be captured perfectly by the retina, thus the vision becomes better, clearer and sharper.

Indications and contraindications of lasik eye surgery
Lasik eye surgery can be performed for people with visual impairment as follows:
  • Long distant (Myopia). This is a condition when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too convex. The condition causes the shadow of the object to be focused in front of the retina, so that the object that is located far away will not be clearly visible. The causes of a person experiencing myopia is not yet known clearly, but possibly related to genetic factor of environmental factors. in patients with myopia, lasik eye surgery will flatten the cornea of the eye that is too thick so that the focus of light can fall right on the retina.
  • Close blindness (hypermetropia). This a condition when the eyeball is too short or the corneal arch is too flat. The condition causes the shadow of an object that should be focused on the retina, focused behind the retina so that objects located near the eye can't be clearly visible. Nearness is generally detected early and can be genetically inherited. In patients with hipermetropia, lasik eye surgery is done to make the coronas of the eyes more convex so that the focus of light falls right on the retina.
  • Astigmatism. This is an eye condition that occurs due to the curvature of the cornea and  / or the lens of the eye is not symmetrical, so the shadow of the object caught in the eye can not focus properly. Astigmatism can occur to a person from birth or after an accident, surgery or illness. the disorder is not due to reading in dim areas or watching television to closely. Lasik eye surgery in astigmatism sufferers will regulate the shape of the asymmetrical cornea to be more normal and symmetrical.
Keep in mind that LASIK eye surgery can not correct old eye or presbyter vision problems. Most doctors will suggest methods of improving vision with other methods before recommending LASIK eye surgery. The usual vision repair method is using glasses or lens contacts.

LASIK Eye Surgery should not be performed in patients with the following conditions:
  • Have good eyesight
  • Has a large pupil or a thin cornea
  • Having a job that can be affected post LASIK eye surgery done
  • Have a presbyopia eye
  • Following a sport at risk of physical trauma to the face.
Requirements for prospective patients of LASIK Eye surgery are as follows:
  • Minimum age 18 years (at least 21 health institutions). This requirement is because a person's vision will continue to change over time up to a maximum of 18 years. Exceptions to children who have one nearsighted eye and a normal eye.
  • The patient's eyes should be healthy and the patient's treatment should be stable. If the prospective patient has nearsightedness, LASIK eye surgery should be postponed until the patient's eyes are completely stable, as nearsightedness may continue to grow until the age of 30 years.
  • The patient's eye condition can be treated with LASIK.
  • Not suffering from diabetes, glaucoma, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, herpes around the eyes, or cataracts.
